Behavioral Support Services (BSS) include a constellation of home and community based support services designed to assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to thrive in their community of choice through early identification of potential problem behaviors, preventing escalation, and responding to behavioral emergencies and crises.

The Behavioral Support Services at The Arc of Howard County provides comprehensive, person-centered services designed to enhance the quality of life of the individuals we support. Our goal is to equip direct support professionals, family members, caregivers, and other members of a person’s support team with the knowledge, training, and practical tools needed to effectively understand, prevent, and respond to behaviors of concern while promoting skill development and independence.
Behavioral Support Services are individualized and collaborative, focusing on the unique strengths, needs, and goals of each person. Our services include:
- Behavioral Assessments
- Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs)
- Behavioral Consultation
- Brief Behavioral Support Implementation Services
- Development and ongoing revision of Behavior Support Plans (BSPs)
- Data collection and analysis
- Staff, family, and caregiver training
- Ongoing monitoring and coaching to ensure effective implementation of behavioral strategies
As an integrated department within The Arc of Howard County, our Behavioral Support Services provide true wraparound support. Our team works closely with residential, day, employment, and community-based programs, allowing us to coordinate services, streamline communication, and ensure consistency across all environments.
