Get Involved: Advocacy
Promoting full community life
Although attitudes about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have improved over the years, ignorance, misconceptions and prejudice still exist. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have become their own advocates, organizing and speaking before local groups and elected officials, even testifying at hearings for more funding for programs and services. The Arc has a very active Governmental Affairs Committee, which meets monthly. If you are interested in serving on this committee, contact Executive Director Carol A. Beatty.
You can sign up for Legislative Updates to stay informed about legislative issues in the Maryland General Assembly.
Family members, staff and community activists also promote full community life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc recognizes individuals and groups who put the mission statement of The Arc into practice at an annual awards ceremony.
Celebration of Excellence: Annual Meeting and Awards were held May 19, 2009, 7-9 p.m., at The Bain Center in Columbia. This event recognizes those who promote an inclusive environment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To nominate someone for a 2010 Celebration of Excellence award, fill out and submit a nomination form by March 2010.
